Wisdom of the Hawk

hawk“Birds sing after a storm; why shouldn’t people feel as free to delight in whatever sunlight remains to them?”  ~Rose Kennedy

Look to the heavens and you may see a hawk, a seagull, a crane or another species of bird soaring high above the earth. There is much we can learn from watching our winged friends. First, as you watch them flying above you, you will notice that they typically expend very little effort. They simply spread their wings and use the power of the breeze to keep them aloft. If they choose to fly higher or lower, they make a slight adjustment of their wings, the tilt of their head or their body and this small adjustment propels them to their desired height. You do not see them struggling against the wind current and flapping their wings aimlessly; instead they use the current to their advantage for a smooth flight. They work with whatever comes their way, not against it. Often, these magnificent creatures travel in flocks and in a V-formation to minimize the workload of each member and to maximize the experience. It is during the take-off that a bird expends the most energy. This is not unlike our own life as we begin a new task or phase of life—most energy is spent in getting started. As they land, birds do not crash down to earth; instead they glide gently and purposefully to their chosen, perfect landing space. Perhaps the most important lesson we can learn from a bird, specifically a hawk, is perspective. Imagine soaring above your own life and getting the “hawk-eye” view. A broad, big picture perspective of your life will bring you a new sense of purpose and understanding, along with a joy and ease for what is around you. Yes, we can learn much from our winged friends. Looking for wisdom and a smooth journey?  Look to the wisdom of the hawk. Now, that’s Powerful!

Gratitude:  I am grateful for the example of soaring birds.

Intention:  I use big picture thinking to broaden my perspective.
