It has been said that the thoughts we have in the middle of the night are ones we should pay attention to. We’ve all woken up at 2:00am with some crazy thought about what’s wrong in our life, or conversely some incredibly creative idea that’s the answer to what we were trying so hard to come up with during the day. These wee-hour insights have provided many of us with direction for moving forward, and those who take action on them often find miraculous happenings occurring for them. This is the power of the subconscious and unconscious mind at work.
It has also been said that the thoughts we have in the middle of the night are merely a microcosm of the things we saw, heard or were reminded of sometime during our waking hours, and that they have no specific meaning for us. You know, you watched Breaking Dawn Part 2 before you went to sleep and you wake up in the pitch black of the night thinking of your old friend from high school, Mary Alice, and you wonder why she popped in. Are these thoughts simply memories conjured in our subconscious popping up at an inopportune time to rob us of a peaceful nights’ sleep? Perhaps. Perhaps not. So the question is…
Should You Pay Attention to Bumps in the Night?
Over the years I have learned that thoughts pop in and out of my conscious mind with regular frequency. Sometimes I shrug them off as meaningless and other times I pay attention and take action. What I have found is that all thoughts come to me for a reason. Yes, some are born of the recent events, conversations, television shows or people I see in the supermarket. But if they are in my awareness, I feel that they are here for a purpose.
Do I take action on everything? Absolutely not. There are not enough hours in the day (or night) for this. But what I have learned is to allow these thoughts to come and go, act upon what resonates, and leave the rest out there in the ethers. Is there a right or wrong answer to this? I don’t think so. This is simply what works for me. I suggest you do whatever works for you.
As for me, I’m going to look up Mary Alice… Or maybe it’s Mary OR Alice.
