Middle of the Night Twinges

sleepless-night-400x400They happen to everyone at some time or another. You wake up in a cold sweat in the middle of the night with the remnants of a crazy dream swirling around in your head. You missed the deadline, or you forgot to send that email, or you really need to have an answer and, for the life of you, you don’t know what it is.

These same twinges can come to you in the middle of the day. As you drive to pick up the kids from dance practice, you realize that you threw your favorite jeans in the dryer instead of hanging them up and now you’re pretty sure they’ll fit your daughter instead of you, or you suddenly remember that your mother-in-law’s birthday was yesterday – and we all know that’s not so good.

Why Do Things Pop In and Out When They Do?

The truth is your brain is a magnificent piece of machinery. It works nonstop to keep your body running smoothly, killing bacteria, pumping blood, sending messages to your fingers to type on the keypad, allowing you to read and comprehend what’s in front of you. Your brain is magnificent! But sometimes it seems that there’s a delay or something blocking the way of what might be normal, everyday, logical thinking.

Ideally, we’d have these twinges occur ‘on-schedule’ and there for us when we need them. The thing that blocks them is overwhelm, stress, and the need we have to be everything to everyone.

So How Can You Get Your Thoughts to Work on Your Schedule?

Rest. That’s it… give it a rest. Rest your brain regularly and be sure to feed it what it needs (plenty of water and good fats). There are recent studies that say we, as a people, don’t get an adequate amount of sleep for optimal brain function. It’s recommended that we get at least seven hours each night. Then, there are studies about napping in the middle of the day. Power naps of 20 minutes or less can reset the body, create a more alert brain, and provide a sense of overall peace and calm.

I don’t know about you, but I feel better just knowing this. Gotta go now. I am off for a quick nap!

Now that’s Powerful!
