Get ‘Em From the Get Go

group-of-women-laughingIt is within a matter of seconds that a first impression is made – this goes for meeting someone in person as well as reading something in writing.  In a matter of seconds our brains form an opinion about the person in front of us. Our mind draws on a lifetime of past experiences and immediately begins to make comparisons to others we have met and anything we have learned from them and about them. Our brain goes into search mode: Do I like her? Is she for real? What’s in this relationship for me?

First Impressions Are Lasting Impressions

If you look at your relationships, you can probably remember meeting someone for the first time. You remember where you were when you met and what you first talked about. And most prominently, you remember how you ‘felt’ about them upon your first encounter. On one hand, if you had a warm and comfortable feeling from them and felt a welcoming presence you most likely opened yourself up to further the relationship. On the other hand, if you had a yellow warning sign flashing in your head and you felt under attack or threatened in some way, you most likely proceeded with caution or backed away from the potential relationship altogether. Even if you didn’t know where exactly these feelings were coming from, you probably honored them to some degree at that first meeting and acted accordingly.

How You Feel Is the Best Indicator for You

Now, it is true that first impressions are not always correct. The other person (or you) may have been having an unusual or ‘off’ day and the vibes that were shared between you did not reflect the highest possibility or state of being for your relationship. Of course, it is good to note that these vibes will be a part of your future relationship and ‘pop up’ from time to time. The point is…

Everyone Deserves A Second Chance

Be sure to give the same second chance to yourself when you get some bad vibes about whatever is going on with you!
