I don’t know about you, but the best way for me to get anything done is to give myself a hard and fast deadline. When I know I have a limited period of time to complete a task some really cool things start happening in my brain and body.
It’s as if I find a gear I never knew I had and things not only start to flow, they actually ‘amp up’.
If I’m creating a plan, thoughts and ideas flourish and immediately fall into the perfect place. If I’m writing an article, words shoot out of my fingertips and gel on the page before me. If I’m readying my house for guests, the mop and vacuum seem to dance on their own and the menu planning, power grocery shopping, and food prep is a breeze. Can you relate? It’s as if I’m in the flow and …
I Have All the Time I Need… No Matter What
How can it be then, that there are other times that I sit for hours without getting anything done? As a rule I’m not lazy – although I can procrastinate with the best of them. Generally, I have focus and direction – but I have known myself to feel at a loss at times. For the most part I work well on my own – albeit I love being part of a team. So what gives?
Why do I have to impose a deadline to ramp up my productivity?
I think it has to do with finding the importance of the task at hand. I must keep the end result top of mind. I must live into the outcome I desire. And I must truly FEEL the good that will come from getting it done, and getting it done timely.
If I don’t do these things and allow myself to become complacent, I become ineffective and uninspired. I also know that if I move forward not feeling connected to the end result or trying to force it, I often end up with a result that is far less than satisfying and the experience along the way is often excruciating.
What’s a Girl to Do?
I think I’m not alone in this. I’ve had many conversations about motivation and inspiration with people who have struggled with it and others who have found the key. I’ve studied the masters and their systems for becoming uber-productive and results-oriented. I’ve created my own structure that regularly works for me – until it doesn’t.
And then I remind myself of two things: First, my “why”; and second, it’s all about the journey. When I stay focused on my ‘why’ – the real reason behind what it is I’m setting out to accomplish – I flow into creation mode, I automatically get inspired, and I’m moved to action. As I move into action I remind myself to enjoy every step along the way. When we were in business together, my father used to say, “If we’re not enjoying this, let’s do something else.” With these words, I remember to…
Find the Joy in the Journey and the Happy in the Happenings.
If I can do it, you can too. Simply focus on the ‘why’, have fun along the way, and the result will take care of itself – all in perfect timing!
All is well.
Wishing you joy in the journey
